You Can Do Everything (That Matters)

I started Lean Nonprofit to help nonprofit practitioners like you to change the world, bit by bit, a little for the better every day. I believe in people like us - people who care about something bigger than themselves - people who are willing to do whatever it takes to make a difference, day in and day out.

I believe in you and me SO much, I'm staking my livelihood on it. I think you agree that building your skills and knowledge are important. Yes, it's true.

But I also think, deep down inside you, you know that there is more to it. You know that getting to the place you really want to be takes a bit more than just learning and knowledge and technical stuff. It requires you to dig further, run harder, give more, and BE more than everyone around you. It means you have to, every single day, work toward becoming a better person to become a better leader.

Are you with me?

I know this because I slowly, slowly came to realize this was the truth while I toiled away, day after day, giving more, doing more, producing more, managing more, manifesting more...and yet, I was still far from where I expected to be. I was seeing fallout from my efforts. People around me burning out and dropping away...GOOD people, smart, hard-working, wonderful people.

And I thought, there must be more to this than the book learnin' and webinars and conferences and ALL THE MEETINGS I attend every single day.

There must be something I'm missing.

There must be something a little "off" about me.

What's wrong with me?

And you know what. The answer is: nothing is wrong with me. And nothing is wrong with you. You are who you are, and you can live up to the person you were born to be! So can I. We can do it together.

See, what I found out was, I can't just be one-sided person, bringing ALL my energy to work, and leaving nothing for myself or my family. I can't just get up before it's light, go to work, peck away at it, meet with people all day, never eat, and just make it work. Not forever, anyway.

Being a true nonprofit rockstar - or just, really, doing what you're called to do - the thing that gnaws your heart to be and do and become? It requires your soul, your heart, and your spirit - your WHOLE self - to be aligned with your mission (YOUR mission - not even your organization's mission - for now). YOUR calling. YOUR destiny.

So, while I do want to provide lots of tools and actionable stuff for you, your friends and people like you - I also realize that is simply NOT ENOUGH. You can get these kinds of tools anyplace, if you look hard enough (it's a pain, but you can eventually cobble it together).

What you CAN'T find everywhere is technical training and help linked with the inner work you have to do in order to become the person you are meant to be. The real you, the you that may be hiding, just a little. The you that is passionate and committed and...tired, confused, really SICK of not getting there! Always having to push more, always having to do more, and never feeling like you measure up.

Does that sound familiar?

Good news!

It doesn't have to be this way.

Start today - right now - by stopping for a second. Ask yourself:

"who am I, really?"

For real, ask yourself this, and only once you have jotted down some thoughts, read on...

Did you start with a job title? A relational title? A social label?

Or were you able to connect with your core - your essence - who you are and what you're about?

It's not easy.

But you have to be able to get to the point where you see yourself for who you really are, in all your wonderful, messy glory. With all your intrinsic value, worth, and beauty. Do you feel it? It's OK if you don't just yet. You'll get there. It takes PRACTICE! And WORK! And sometimes you want to just default to "I am the X thing at X place and a sister, mother, aunt...blah blah blah."

But those things do not define you. Your actions do not define you. Your thoughts are just your thoughts - even they do not define you. Your true self, your really real realest part of you - that is who you are. And you are waiting to be found.

YOU are more than you ever imagined. Take a little time to be nice to yourself for a minute. To suspend judgment, to just be still. Get your strength and your motivation and your will to change the world all gathered up. Let it grow stronger, like a tornado of love.

And then, go on, get out there, do the work, and CELEBRATE your successes, TASTE your failures and let them teach you. Most of all, connect with your soul - be with your WHOLE self today!

Remember - Nonprofits are businesses, too - so run yours like a boss!
